Life Story

Bapusaheb Jog

Sakharam Hari Jog, known as Bapusaheb Jog, was a supervisor in the Public Works Department. After retiring around 1909 he came to Shirdi with his wife and settled there for good, living in a small house near the Masjid.

After the death of Megha in 1912, Baba gave Jog the duty of performing his daily arati, which Jog did with great care until the Mahasamadhi in 1918. Every day he also read the Dnyaneshwari in the morning and the Eknathi Bhagavat in the afternoon at Sathe Wada, and devotees gathered to listen. He was a sincere, simple and sometimes impatient man, and Baba patiently shaped him.

Jog once complained that despite years of service he had not received spiritual progress. Baba told him that his worldly ties would fall away in time and that he would one day take sannyas. After his wife's death, Jog did take sannyas, as Baba had said. He is also remembered in the Satcharitra for the umbrella: in old photographs of Baba's procession it is Jog who holds the chhatra over Baba.
