Life Story

Dattatraya D.Rasane

Dattatreya Damodar Rasane was the son of Damu Anna Rasane, born about a year after Baba gave his father the blessed mangoes. When the child was fifteen months old, Baba checked his father's notebook and confirmed the name he had foretold: Daulat Shah. In 1900, at about five years old, the boy had his first haircut ceremony at Shirdi, and Baba himself guided his hand as he wrote his first letters on a slate. He then studied at the Shirdi school.

When it was time for him to marry, four horoscopes were placed before Baba, and Baba chose the one belonging to a poor family's daughter. Baba did not go to the wedding at Pandharpur himself but sent Shama in his place. Dattatreya and his wife suffered much grief, losing several children in infancy. After one loss, Baba appeared in a dream and comforted him, promising a healthy child, and a son was later born and grew up well.

In later years, during a time of illness and hardship, Dattatreya prayed at a temple near Junnar and said he saw Baba's form in a light. In a dream, Baba asked him for his whole body and mind as bhiksha. He gave his account of Baba in 1936, at the age of forty.
