Life Story

Abdullah Jan

Abdullah Jan was a Pathan from Tarbela in the Hazara district, near Peshawar. He left home as a young boy with no one to support him, dreaming of travelling to Mecca. On his way south in 1913 he heard that a fakir at Shirdi was generous to other fakirs and might help him reach Mecca, so he came to Shirdi.

The moment he entered the Masjid, his eyes met Baba's and he felt at once that Sai was his Guru. He stayed on, and Baba fed him and the other fakirs generously. Abdullah later said that when he came he regarded Hindus as enemies, but after three years in Baba's company that feeling left him completely, and he came to see Hindus as his own brothers.

Baba took Mahasamadhi when Abdullah was about 22. Feeling lost, he set out on his travels again. In 1926, while praying at the tomb of a saint in the Swat valley, he dreamt of Sai Baba sitting near his head, and knew that Baba was still watching over him. He married in 1924 and settled with his family at Korhale, near Sakori, a few miles from Shirdi. He said that Baba appeared to him every few years to guide him.
