Life Story

Seetadevi Tarkhad

Seetadevi Tarkhad was the wife of Ramchandra Atmaram Tarkhad, a mill manager in Bombay who lived in Bandra. The Tarkhads were members of the Prarthana Samaj, a reform movement that did not believe in worshipping idols or saints, but their son became devoted to Baba and gradually brought the whole family to him.

The Satcharitra tells two famous stories about the family. Once, while the mother and son were in Shirdi, the son was worried that no one at home would offer Baba's daily naivedya. That same day Baba said he had gone to their home in Bandra, found no food offered, and returned hungry. When the father checked, he found that the offering had indeed been forgotten that day.

The second story is about Mrs. Tarkhad herself. In Shirdi, as she was about to eat, a hungry dog came to the door, and she gave it a piece of bread. Later Baba told her, "I was that dog. You fed me, and I am satisfied." Through her, Baba taught that feeding any hungry creature is feeding him.
