Life Story

Tatya G.Kote Patil

Tatya Ganpat Kote Patil was the son of Bayjabai, who fed Baba in the forest in his early days. Baba loved Tatya as his own nephew and called Bayjabai his sister. Tatya grew up in Baba's company, and for years he slept in the Dwarakamai with Baba and Mhalsapati, the three lying with their heads pointing in different directions and talking late into the night.

Tatya was a farmer and a man of the village, and Baba took care of his family and affairs. Tatya often walked beside Baba in the Chavadi processions, holding his hand. Baba gave him money every day, and Tatya was one of the few who could speak to Baba freely, even argue with him.

In 1916 Baba hinted that Tatya's life would be in danger at Vijayadashami two years later. In September 1918 Tatya fell gravely ill, and his condition worsened day by day. Baba himself was weak with fever. On Vijayadashami, 15 October 1918, Tatya began to recover, and Baba took Mahasamadhi. Devotees believe that Baba gave his own life in Tatya's place. Tatya lived on until 1945.
